LSSP and ICON 2009

Louis Bayes

5/28/2009

As you have heard, the Large Scale Service Project is August 1st to the 5th in Birmingham, Alabama. LSSP is an opportunity for all members of Circle K International to get together and to take part in service projects during the day to benefit the community. At night, it is time to party with them, playing Pit, Spoons (with markers), Apples to Apples, Mafia, and much more! Last year, WE-CAN sent four people down to LSSP, and they all had a blast.

This year’s LSSP has not been finalized as of yet as the LSSP committee is having internal issues. I have not heard yet when it will be finalized, or when registration will be out for it. I will make sure to inform you all when that does happen. The proposed projects for LSSP are volunteering at the Birmingham Zoo, Weeds to Seeds (cleaning up neighbourhoods and restoring them), and volunteering to help United Cerebral Palsy (building ramps for people who do not have easy access into their homes). Another potential project involves the Botanical Gardens.

The cost is around $165-180 per person, which will include the hotel stay, most food, transportation, and other costs that may arise. The one thing that will not be included is your travel to Birmingham, Alabama.

The 54th annual Circle K International Convention will follow LSSP, taking place from August 5th to the 8th inclusive. We will be in the same hotel as LSSP. Over 500 Circle K’ers from various district, as well as countries, will be attending. It is a great way to meet and greet other members of the organization, pick their minds to see what projects they have accomplished, as well as take in some training seminars.

The registration cost for ICON is $185 per person, and it does NOT include food, hotel, transportation, or other costs. As well, Heather Waite (Capital District OTIC chair) is planning Alabama Adventure on August 9th. Alabama Adventure is the local theme park and it is just minutes outside of Birmingham. A one-day pass to the park is $34.99 plus tax.

I have had three people, so far, voice their interest in attending LSSP, ICON, as well as stay a day or two later. If you are interested in attending LSSP, ICON, a day or two later, or any combination of those, or just need more information, feel free to e-mail me. As well, you are able to find more information on the Circle K International Website. Thank you all and hope to see you in Birmingham!
